At the camp the prisoners were forced to drain the moor and cut peat. Many did not survive the exertions. One of the inmates, actor Wolfgang Langhoff, a communist and anti-fascist, convinces the officers to allow a little variety show. As director he leads the audience through the "Circus Konzentrazani": There are clowns and a ballet of the fattest prisoners. The show's highlight is a song written for the occasion by Johann Esser, Wolfgang Langhoff and Rudi Goguel: "We are the peat-bog soldiers, we’re marching with our spades to the bog". The song goes around the world quickly: prisoners who had been transferred sing it in other camps. In London a released prisoner sings it to Hanns Eisler, who promptly writes a piano version and takes it to the USA. Ernst Busch and Paul Robeson sing it in Spain to support the fight against dictator Franco. In 1942 Robeson recordes an English version. The "Moorsoldaten" becomes "The Peat-Bog Soldiers", "Los Soldados del Pantano" and "Le Chant des Marais". Am 27. August 1933 führen Gefangene im Konzentrationslager Börgermoor im Emsland eine regelrechte Revue auf. Die Häftlinge müssen Moore trockenlegen und Torf stechen, viele überleben die Strapazen nicht. Einer der Insassen, Schauspieler Wolfgang Langhoff, überzeugt die Offiziere, ein wenig Abwechslung zu erlauben. Langhoff ist Kommunist und Antifaschist, und hier führt er nun als Direktor durch die Show des „Zirkus Konzentrazani“: Clowns, ein Ballett der dicksten Häftlinge, und zum Abschluss erklingt erstmals ein Lied, das Johann Esser, Wolfgang Langhoff und Rudi Goguel frisch geschrieben haben: „Wir sind die Moorsoldaten und ziehen mit dem Spaten ins Moor“. Von dort zieht es um die Welt: Häftlinge, die verlegt wurden, singen es in anderen Lagern. Ein Entlassener singt es in London Hanns Eisler vor, der eine Klavierfassung schreibt und sie mit in die USA nimmt. Ernst Busch und Paul Robeson singen es in Spanien, um den Kampf gegen Diktator Franco zu unterstützen, Robeson nimmt 1942 eine englische Fassung auf. Aus den „Moorsoldaten“ werden „The Peat-Bog Soldiers“, „Los Soldados del Pantano“ und „Le Chant des Marais“. Langhoff, der das Lied initiiert hatte, wird 1946 Intendant des Deutschen Theaters in Ost-Berlin. Pronto la canción da la vuelta al mundo: Presos que habían sido trasladados la cantan en otros campos. En Londres, un preso excarcelado se la canta al compositor Hanns Eisler, quien inmediatamente escribe un arreglo para piano y la lleva a EEUU. Ernst Busch y Paul Robeson la cantan en España en apoyo a la lucha contra el dictador Franco. En 1942 Robeson graba una versión en inglés. “Die Moorsoldaten“ también se conoce como “The Peat-Bog Soldiers“, “Los Soldados del Pantano“ y “Le Chant des Marais“.
