This is an alternate version of the introduction scene: This version was designed to be played on an MT-32 or Roland Sound Canvas SC-55. It was never intended to be played with the SoundBlaster (FM), and, due to this, the instrument mappings are not properly assigned. It has been included solely for completion's sake. There are three different versions of this cue, which are only adapted to certain soundcards. ***mm4theme: plays correctly for *FM, MT-32, *PC98, *FM-Towns ***bigtheme: plays correctly for *MT-32, SC-55 ***cantheme: plays correctly for *SC-55 (* = version playing in final game) Version 1 (mm4theme) is the original version of the theme, written for MT-32 and adapted for FM (presumably before a decision was made to make the SC-55 Canvas version). However, a more expanded version 2 was composed for the MT-32, which ended up being used in the game. Finally, a unique Round Sound Canvas (SC-55) version 3 was composed. Composition wise, version 1 (mm4theme) lacks a longer percussion intro as reflected in version 2 (bigtheme) and an even longer percussion intro in cantheme. This percussion intro is not to be confused with the additional drone intro which is in the game versions of version 2 (bigtheme) and version 3 (cantheme). This drone was not part of any version of the original composition by Tim Tully and was likely added by the sound programmer for the final game version. While the original version (A) ("bigtheme") has an ending segment, this was deleted from the final game version (B). Version 3 ("cantheme") seems to be the fullest arrangement, but in its midi data, one channel briefly changes to an English Horn, but during which no notes are played. However, the notes for this part are in fact present in both version 1 (mm4theme) and version 2 (bigtheme). So this cue is not 100% complete in any of the versions. Some earlier versions of this theme have been included toward the end of the soundtrack, two of which feature an entirely different theme. This theme is not used at all in the Macintosh version. "Outdoors: Day 4 (Outday4)" from MM5 is used instead during this introduction sequence. OTHER VARIATIONS: The original version (A) of "Might and Magic IV Main Theme - version 1" features a "tambourine" line which is omitted in the game version (B). The original version (A) of "Might and Magic IV Main Theme - version 2" is a much fuller mix than the stripped down game version (B). However, the final game version (B) contains the additional drone at the start. * * * * * The FM version of the soundtrack is what most people would have heard when they had originally played the game. The MT-32 version is how the tracks were originally composed, while FM is a revised version for use with lesser quality soundcards with less channels and instrument selection. However, due to a programming error in the game's .M music format, the notation of every single song of every music version in the final game has been lowered by 2 semitones. The FM version (having been made from the original MT-32 versions, and being unable to be altered) has retained this 2 semitone lowering for the soundtrack, while all of the MT-32 versions play at their original tone as composed even though they would be lowered by two semitones in the final game. These FM tracks were recorded using an authentic "Sound Blaster 16 - CT2230 Rev. 049432" equipped with a real OPL3. Selected soundcard option in game was "Sound Blaster".
