The main reason is that Israel is surrounded by Egypt, Palestine and Syria which are their enemies. The biggest Israel ally, US is located on the other side of the planet, therefore Israel has to invest a big part of their GDP into defense. Comparing to other countries in the Middle east, Israel has almost no oil and gas resources and only 20% of it’s land is arable.
