You can use the right hand grip rule to predict the direction of magnetic fields around a wire and a solenoid. In this video, we will look at magnetic fields using plotting compasses. When there is no current in the wire or the solenoid, the compasses should point North. When current travels through the wire, it generates a magnetic field. The compasses will point in the direction of the magnetic field.
