Brown is the New Red for Castanets + Fixed Media (2019) by Gina Ryan

Performed and composed by Dr. Gina Ryan Faculty Recital, The College of Music, Payap University Filmed by Alan Fleming, February 15, 2020 This piece was first premiered in Guanajuanto, Mexico for the percussion research symposium, Transplanted Roots. I wrote this piece in 2019 as a response to the air pollution crisis in Chiang Mai, Thailand that had reached a pinnacle in 2019, although now it is 2020 and the problem worsens. This piece is in a cyclic form as each minute represents a year. Each month (five seconds long) shows the average AQI on the screen behind me, which is based on data that I had collected from several organizations (Aug 2011- July 2019) with a little creative license.
